About the Team
The Museography and Education team comprises specialists, museum professionals, visual artists, inventory managers, and technical and maintenance staff, all contributing to the smooth running of operations.
Types of activities
- management (inventorying, cataloging, preservation, and maintenance) of the MNG collections, comprising over 80,000 specimens—minerals, rocks, and fossils—of which only a fraction (approximately 6,000) are on display in the permanent exhibition, while the remainder are stored in the museum’s basement collection rooms or within the National Lithotheque collections; in addition to mineral, rock, and fossil collections, the museum holds documents (field notebooks, geological maps, books, offprints, photographs, letters) and personal items (geological compasses, map cases, geological hammers) that belonged to prominent figures in Romanian geology
- scientific and cultural valorization of the IGR heritage (collections, geological data, etc.) and its promotion
- development of educational programs highlighting topics such as Earth’s interaction with the Universe, Earth’s geospheres and their interrelationships, and anthropogenic activity
- these programs target the general public, categorized by specific audiences (school pupils, university students, specialists), and include preparing pupils for participation in international Olympiads (e.g., IESO)
- research activities, including fieldwork (collecting geological samples), sample preparation (for powder X-ray diffraction, IR absorption spectrometry, and thermal analysis—involving crushing, sieving, sorting under a binocular microscope, grinding in acetone, etc.), and specific analyses (binocular and optical microscopy observations, processing and interpretation of analytical results, documentation)
- dissemination of results from research, creative work, museum activities, and education through publication in specialized journals and books, or participation in conferences and symposia
- cultural projects, research projects, and temporary exhibitions
- organization of fairs, thematic events, symposia, and conferences (both scientific and public-oriented), as well as book launches and guided tours
- collaboration with other educational or sector-specific institutions (museums, universities, private companies, administrative bodies, national or natural parks, etc.)
- sale of items designed to popularize geology, and collection of museum admission fees
