The Compartment of Environmental Geology and Circular Economy has the following main objectives:

  • Supporting the transition from a linear to a more circular economy in mineral resource management;
  • Addressing the depletion of critical raw materials by promoting their recovery, recycling, and reprocessing, thereby closing the loop in their life cycle;
  • Developing environmental and social safeguards to ensure responsible extraction;
  • Conducting environmental impact assessment studies and proposing alternative options to mitigate potential negative outcomes;
  • Improving and developing innovative approaches for the rehabilitation and restoration of mining sites to ensure long-term environmental, social, and economic sustainability in a changing climate.
