The Geophysical Data Portal of the Geological Institute of Romania, Carried out across several phases of the Core Program (PN 09 21 01 05), the project aimed to systematize and compile a digital database—serving as a prototype for an internet-accessible geographic information system (web-GIS)—designed to eventually aggregate the entire body of geophysical data acquired to date. This data is drawn from reports and syntheses within the Institute’s Geological Archive and supplemented, where appropriate, with auxiliary materials (from completed projects or other documentation). These efforts facilitate improved data interpretation, benefiting from advancements made in the interim through the development of new data processing methods—some utilizing proprietary software created by IGR specialists.
The structuring of the integrated GIS database took into account all data obtained through the various geophysical methods employed by the IGR—including remote sensing—while also facilitating access to this information via modern tools (Web GIS) and fostering the continuous advancement of expertise in these fields through the internal and international projects in which they are applied. The GIS web application contains 17 GIS services:
- Geophysical data scale 1:1,000,000 (magnetic, gravimetric, thermal maps)
- Geophysical data at a scale of 1:200,000 (magnetic and gravimetric)
- Detailed geophysical data (electrometric, radiometric), boreholes and tunnels
- Seismic data
- Magnetotelluric currents
- Remote sensing data processed from satellite images
- Auxiliary maps scale 1:1,000,000 used to determine ecoregions in Romania
- GIS pollutant modeling maps in the upper basin of Argeș
- Map of useful non-metallic mineral substances
- Map of energy resources (oil and gas)
- Geothermal resources of the Moesian Platform, the Pannonian Basin, and the Triassic aquifer at Oradea
- Map of crustal movements
- Supplementary geothermal data
- Mineral and thermal waters
- Geochemistry (1:3,000,000 scale) of surface waters and river sediments
- Hydrogeology (1:1,000,000 scale)
- Maps from the Geological Atlas (1:1,000,000 scale): maps of Quaternary, pre-Tortonian, pre-Vraconian, and pre-Westphalian formations; geobotanical map; soil granulometry map
